Nestled on the banks of the Piako River, Ngatea is the central hub of the Hauraki Plains and has an array of shops, eating establishments and accommodation on offer. As the largest settlement in the Hauraki Plains, Ngatea is a service town for the farming area of the Hauraki Plains. Today it continues to be the central business hub of the region, with a large number of retail outlets, eateries, accommodation and professional services.
Ngatea has two schools, Hauraki Plains College (with 709 students as of July 2016) and Ngatea Primary School (with 260 students as of July 2016).
